Qawali available now on all streaming platforms

As the fifth anniversary of my dad's passing approaches, I’d like to dedicate a song in his memory. The last week of his life, when he was too weak to even move, this song is all he wanted to listen to ... he would raise his arms up in ecstasy and muster the energy to sing along, pausing to tell me the meaning every time, as tears would stream down his face. Those poignant moments are still so vivid and etched in my mind. I hope wherever he is, he has found that divine love that this song speaks of.

Qawali is a form of Sufi devotional music, where one is in ecstatic love and union with the Divine. This rendition of the well-known qawali, “Tumhein Dillagi Bhool,” was popularized by the legendary vocalist, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

The Aditya Prakash Ensemble, a Los Angeles based music group, was founded by award-winning Indian classical vocalist, Aditya Prakash, in 2010. Prakash draws his inspiration to experiment with Indian classical music from his close musical collaborations and performances with Pandit Ravi Shankar, Anoushka Shankar, Karsh Kale, and more recently, with acclaimed choreographer, Akram Khan.

The roots of the Ensemble’s collaboration started as UCLA roommates and friends jamming, to a more informed approach, from their Ethnomusicology studies, where horizons to cross-cultural musical interaction expanded vastly. The result frames Prakash’s distinctive vocal style with jazz, funk, and hip-hop to create a wholly original, genre-melding sound.

“Aditya represents a new generation of musician. He has studied his traditional craft extensively but is not afraid to take that language and art form into uncharted territories”
-Karsh Kale

“Years ago a young talented kid called Aditya Prakash worked alongside me in my father's ensemble, and went on to tour the world with me as part of my Rise tour in 2005. Today he's a dear friend and a fully accomplished composer with his own Aditya Prakash Ensemble.”
-Anoushka Shankar

lyrics

“Forget this frivolous infatuation
Embark on the journey of True Love
Embark on this journey and you will not mock my suffering
When you have given your heart to True Love
A smile dare not creep upon the lips…
This is a matter of the heart not just an infatuation!”

about

Aditya Prakash Ensemble Los Angeles, California

The Aditya Prakash Ensemble is a collaboration that breaks down walls between the cultures of jazz and Indian classical music, to discover music that is free from genre. Through the common language of improvisation, as well as compositions that uniquely blend Indian ragas and complex rhythms, with Jazz’s rich harmonic structure, the group seeks to illuminate the transcendental nature of music. ... more
